    just installed Kubuntu 6.10 how do i get a gui

    i just installed Kubuntu 6.10 alternate cd on my ibm thinkpad 770z and all im getting is the comand promp windo how do i get the kde gui. im very new to linux and know next tyo nothing about it. any help would be great.

    i'm quite new to linux too, but have been playing with it for a while, so if i'm wrong, don't make a big deal out of it and please correct me.
    When i do not get a gui after a fresh intall, i always try the combination ctrl - alt - f7 or ctrl - alt - f8. that is when you already of X running. If X is not running, then type startx at the command prompt. This should get at least the gui login screen up.

      yes, startx should work. If not, something in your Xorg.conf could be wrong.

      at the prompt type :-

      Code:
       Sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

      that will prompt you to go throug all your video stuff, and enable you to configure it to a working state.
