[RESOLVED] Mouse is stuttering - everything is stuttering

Since 2 days after doing a regular update the graphic is stuttering / jumping - System comes unusable.
When moving the mouse from left to right on the screen it stops 10 times for a moment.

kubuntu 22.04 - all updates done - regular Destop PC without anything special.
    top
    shows nvidia-modeset and X11 constantly with 20%

    Xorg.0.log:

    (......) this message comes constantly

It started with the latest nvidia driver 470.239.06 but I tried also every alternatives (390 450 418) - same for all.
    Hardware is GT730 with 3 identical Displays (1920x1080, 60Hz)

Any idea what the reason could be?

    Any help is really appreaciated

    Welcome.

I guess you are using X11 (and not Wayland) and Plasma 5.24.7 ?
Or do you have all Kubuntu Backports enabled and already use Plasma 5.27.10 ?

Well, if you are sure it "started with the latest Nvidia driver" then the cause seems to be obvious…
Otherwise there could be many other reasons like Mouse lag when connecting an external HDD for example.

I would completely purge all Nvidia stuff and see if this still occurs with the open source Nouveau driver - then you can be sure if Nvidia was the cause and go from there.

PS: "regular Destop PC without anything special." - there is no such thing as a "regular" PC, e.g. you have an Nvidia graphics card and others don't…

Hello, thank you for your quick answer.
      It's X11 (see x11.0.log) and plasma 5.24.7 - it's the latest for 22.04 LTE!?

I am not absolutely shure whether it starts with the nvidia update. Because all older nvidia drive have the same problem it might be a different reason.
I also tested the Nouveau driver. He does not have this problem but its not working good - no real option.

With "regular Desktop PC" I mean it's not gaming PC with highend hardware and special drivers....
I use 3 Display's - actually they are TV's with 40''. I use this setup for a long time. There is no new hardaware

If Nouveau isn't sufficient for you, I would always go with the latest supported driver version for your Nvidia card that is available directly from the distribution's repositories (in this case directly from Ubuntu.) That causes the least problems in my experience (there may be exceptions, of course).

        Sorry, I overlooked the "Xorg.0.log"…
5.24.7 is not quite the latest possible Plasma for Kubuntu 22.04 LTS, see e.g.:

KDE Plasma 5.27.10 available in Kubuntu Backports Extra
        and
Overview: Kubuntu, its parent and some of its siblings

Plasma 5.27.x solved a lot of issues with multi-monitor setups, but I doubt that it will solve your Nvidia problems - you could give it a try, of course…

PS: You could additionally open Konsole, let sudo journalctl -f run or check dmesg -H and see if anything else useful can be found there.

How are you doing this? Graphically (Discover) or from the CLI (apt or apt-get)?

Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

I do the regular updates only with Discover - works good for me.

Problem with Nouveau is that 2 "kernel worker processes" run with 100% CPU. It's not stuttering in the way the nvidia drivers do so it's possible to work but a real sollution could this not be.

I don't want to use backports and I don't believe that this will solve the problem.

I checked the logfiles. The only notable is in X11.0.log as I posted.

                Hmm....what about general system specs?
Check to see if you hitting swap - some systems seem to like this, and it sure can make things stutter like you describe. It also spikes CPU usage for some things as the processor and chipset tries to manage the drive reads/writes, as well as telling the gpu what to draw.
Checking this at least eliminates a simpler cause

FIXED - Solution comes from nvidia developer forum. Sorry for unpleasantries - reason is so simple - sorry.

The entries in X11.log I posted mean that the system is trying to connect to the display what fails. Reason was a plug in one of my display's not good connected. Maybe the cat played with the cable.

                    I didn't do anything!

But I am glad that this was a "simple" solution - and it reminds me of "if you can't narrow an error down, start with the hardware…"
