[SOLVED] DVI-I/D connected to a DVI-D to VGA adaptor.

Hi mates I just bought a DVI-D to VGA adaptor and I just realized it might not work. I did not receive yet the item but I would like to know what others think about it.

My PC graphics card has a DVI-D and DVI-I female input, I've got a only VGA screen, and bought a DVI-D to VGA adaptor:

but totally forgot if It would work since VGA is an analog signal and DVI-D is digital.

Here comes the question:

If I connect my DVI-D adaptor male to the DVI-I female graphics card input and the female entrance of my VGA adaptor with a male VGA cable to the screen, would it work.

Well, I had no idea there are so many types of DVI connectors ... I honestly didn't realise it wasn't so straight forward, not obvious at all. I thought the adapter itself would handle the conversion from digital to analog but apparently not.

If you need a box like this http://www.datapro.net/products/hdmi...converter.html it might be better/cheaper to upgrade your monitor? (I'm guessing your current monitor is getting on in years?).

Yeah, you can't convert DVI-D to VGA with a cheap passive adaptor. There are reasonably inexpensive active adaptors available though, such as: http://www.lindy.co.uk/cables-adapte...er-p7726/s7877

However, you said that your graphics cards has both DVI-D and DVI-I sockets, right? Then you should be able to plug the cheap adaptor you have bought into the DVI-I socket, and that *should* work, because I think the eBay seller has simply labelled the product incorrectly, and that it is actually a DVI-I to VGA adaptor (it certainly looks like one in the picture).

The link you gave me Rod J cleared a lot the path, It might actually work after all. I hope this works as a guide for anyone with the same issues around, It wasnt so straight forward as I thought in the beginning.

Anyway not sure until I try I guess, so will reach you guys with some info after testing, meanwhile I will mark this as resolved.
