Austin's Lab7 Bioinformatics on Linux and Mac Platforms

I perchanced to walk by a "poster" for this company at the conference whereat I was a presenter in Austin a few months ago but didn't pay much attention to it. There were several "posters" on "new startups":

    As of 2013
Austin-based start-up, Lab7 Systems, recently reported that it raised $465 of an expected $500,000 financing from 14 investors. The company filed the funding report in a United States Securities and Exchange Commission form, the Austin Business Journal reports.

Lab7 Systems is a funded, seed-stage company that develops a genomic informatics platform for the research, applied and clinical sequencing markets.
    In 2012 Lab7 raised 210K.

Austin’s Lab7 Systems Launches Free Open Source Software BioBuilds, SeqSigma, and DashO3 Genomic Data Processing Software and New Services

Posted by: Charles Moore September 3, 2013

Austin-based biotech software developer Lab7 Systems, Inc., announced the release of a new free software toolkit and new service offerings for the next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS) bioinformatics community, along with the latest beta version of its Lab7 Dashboard.

Lab7′s BioBuilds application is a reference collection of Open Source bioinformatics tools for genomics, pre-built for Linux and Mac OS X platforms that eliminates the need for users to maintain and build their own versions of these tools. By providing binaries, BioBuilds also enables users to easily reproduce results by removing version dependencies on underlying software.

BioBuilds can run atop the Lab7 Dashboard, the company’s flagship platform,

    however,

the tools contained within BioBuilds can be downloaded and operated independently of the Dashboard.
BioBuilds helps researchers maintain an informatics environment in a few important ways:

    - A standard, platform independent, relocatable package structure enables easy deployment
    - Versioned binary releases of all tools aids in validation and reproducibility
    - Including all supporting libraries ensures tools just work
    - By providing binaries, BioBuilds removes the need to build tools yourself, helping to save time and sanity

    BioBuilds 1.0.9 Downloads (~160MB each):
    - Mac OS X (Intel) dmg, tar.gz
    - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS tar.gz
    - Centos 6 tar.gz
    - Fedora 18 tar.gz

Some other info and "history" biography info....the founder was an RNA researcher.

The little figure at the top right remindes me of Ubus figure:

I was discussing "Linux" with a few people in several "watering holes" while I was in Austin and they commented that Texas is a "hotbed" of Linux action that is flying completely under the radar.

A listing of 4,583 Linux job offerings in Texas.
