    Down time...

    Hi all...

I'm not seeking to complain but I'm wondering why the site is often slow or hangs. There also times that the site will be down, giving one a message "service unavailable," or something like that, for hours at a time.

Does this have to do with who the site is hosted with and is there a way that this situation can be improved?

    Regards...

Yes, you are right. It took so long to load (busy as hell ) anyway maybe a paypal icon would be in order .

I've contacted Open Source and suggested that a PayPal icon be included so that anyone who is concidering helping with the fund raising, sees that PayPal is a choice before clicking on the Donate button.

It's been really bad today. Usually, when Kubuntu times out, I can open a konsole and ping kubuntuforums.net and get my ping back, indicating that the server is up but that SMF is not.
Today, my pings often don't come back.

My own forum gets about half the traffic of this one (well. three or four times as many daily posts but only about half as many concurrent users) and I've used a VPS hosted by asmallorange for about seven years and their shared hosting for a couple years before that.

I've been extremely happy with them - don't think I've ever waited more than half an hour for a reply to a support email. Uptime has been four nines or better over the years.

                http://www.asmallorange.com/hosting/vps/

The new personal VPS packages have 768mb of RAM - mine is an older server with 256mb which seems to run just fine with vBulletin and 35-50 concurrent users.

                  Re: Down time...

KFN was SERVICE UNAVAILABLE yesterday for some time. I notified Claydoh and he contacted one of the site maintenance managers. I saw this morning that SERVICE UNAVAILABLE occurred again, but didn't last very long. There have been slowness isues this morning as well, but at the moment, appears to have gotten better.

Open Source is sensative to the problems that KFN has, and unfortunately continues, to experience. This is the reason funds are being raised for KFN: "...for a new and improved linux web hosting server with better uptime. We would also like to move from Simple Machines Forums to vBulletin." KFN is going to be improved for the benefit of our members. I'm looking forward to it, as I'm sure everyone else is as well.

If you want to contribute, just click on the Donate button at the top of each forum page. You have the option to use PayPay or pay with a credit card (MasterCard, VISA, Discover, or American Express). No amount to small; All amounts greatfully accepted.

                      Re: Down time...

I think we need a better solution. Running on a windows server is probably not the most reliable solution, and it's also pretty embarrassing
                      http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?...untuforums.net

Has anyone tried to contact Canonical? I would assume they would happily host us. And would be running on a *buntu server. If nobody has, I can definitely try to do it.

Yes, there is no explanation of what operating system would that be running, or any other details whatsoever. I still don't understand why we can't ask Canonical. They have been very generous all along, this is the default forum for a supported variant of Ubuntu, and frankly, they do have the hardware. All we need is some room in their iron.

Nor me. Reading the main Ubuntu forums you wouldn't think that there are other versions available with so much talk of Unity and Gnome 3 going on at present. A dedicated Kubuntu forum is a must as any KDE/Kubuntu posts get lost in the noise there. The main Kubuntu site has a link to this forum, in fact it is mentioned in preference to the main forum site.

As I don't know how or why this site came into being I won't comment any further but I think I'll have to use Kubuntu a little longer before I make a donation. Although I still have Ubuntu 10.04 installed it's only been just over a week since I started using Kubuntu 11.04 exclusively.
