Slow dvd writing

Hi,
I am using a compaq v3149AU, with kubuntu 8.1, I have a 8x dvd write in my laptop, but when i write it with K3B, i can never write it above 1.4x speed even after choosing 8x. does this have anything to do with linux??

K3b will intelligently choose the best write speed for your disc if you leave it set to Auto. It is capable of adjusting write speed up or down depending on the media and buffer conditions. I find I get the best results this way.

In my experience with K3b, it seems to write at top speed on about every other disc. I don't know why, and I just let the program do its thing.
