Proformance Issues Post install on my kubuntu tizzy

on my computer a Laptop running kubuntu 7.10 after some time or possibly something i have installed. The proformance is about 80% of what it used to be. perhaps some one could help me w/ the problem. if ne one is able i will post more info as nessessary but basicly i've got the following

    HW
    dell latitude c840
    p4m 1.6GHz (or 1.2Ghz on batt power)
    1GB DDR Ram (+2Gb swap)
    32 mb Geforce 4 Go v.card
    atheros wifi card (minipci )

    SW
    kubuntu 7.10 (+ updates)
    NV driver w/ compiz
firefox(neither installed via apt, from there sites )
    Java (sun's site)
    Flashplayer (adobe's site)

and i have changed the following recently

installed java from sun and removed the other version
    installed flashplayer

other normal daily use, for me thats these programs

    firefox
    rdesktop
    kopete
    amarok
    wine
    kontact
    openoffice

i notice the most slowness when i have firefox running so i think it could be the jre install, however if thats the case idk how to remove it, other then as a plugin for firefox.. also i have tryed this w/ both compiz on and off, however XGL was enabled both times.if some one could help out w/ this that would be super sweet .

Re: Proformance Issues Post install on my kubuntu tizzy

I am running the latest version of HH. Though I had no reason to complain about performance problems up to now, this has changed with the latest update.

When Firefox is running and Yahoo or gmail e-mail is being processed the computer slows down to a crawl.

'top' shows Firefox to fluctuate between taking up close to 100 percent of the CPU time and the majority of the memory (768 Mb) and very minor percentages.
'free -m' shows about 100 Mb of free memory.

I have seen quite a number of posts about the slow processing times and numerous answers/explanations. But none really has been able to satisfy my curiosity and to allow me to improve the speed of Kubuntu and Firefox.

Hoping that an update in the near future will fix this problem or either Firefox or Kubuntu 8.04 will have to go for good.

Does Firefox 2.0+ create similar problems or is it only the advanced FF version?

PS: After shutting down FF, top showed CPU usage by Firefox of between over 70 and 90 percent. Firefox was completely gone from the screen.

Got fed up with FF 3.0 and slow processing. Zapped FF 3.0 into oblivion.
      Installed FF 2.0.

Everything seems to be running fine again.

      Guess this fixed my problem.
