I wonder if v2 will be better in that respect. Might go and check. The picture I finally used had color but not that many, was sorted of a darkish photo. When converted it didn't look that bad. A little grainy, but was nice to have. Now if they can just allow them to coexist with a customized menu the better.

The splash image command in GRUB Legacy is actually a hack. 640x480, 14 bit colors and 8 bit depth is the maximum you can get. Anything else will just fail.

To get something better, try what openSuSE uses: gfxboot screens. There are other alternatives, which I can't recall right now.
