Seriously odd

Hello folks, I have a rather odd... well issue I guess that is puzzling me.
Now normally I use Ubuntu as in my case gnome works better most of the time for me, I have had issues with KDE in the Ubuntu repos you see.
Now dont get me wrong, I do like KDE as I have used it on other distros with varied results, on Mepis and Pclinux I have no issues but in ubuntu its another case... that is until now.
now its gnome that is sluggish and KDE whizzing, all because of todays kernel update.

Now, I am not sure about the kernel updates, but in my experience Kubuntu runs faster with a fresh Kubuntu install rather than installing kubuntu-desktop on top of Ubuntu. Since you have both installed, it leads me to believe you did something of this sort... or how did you do it?
