    Question about Future Releases

Where can I find out what changes will be included or at least planned for future releases of Kubuntu. In particular, which release is supposed to have KDE 4? Is there an official location for such information?

    Re: Question about Future Releases

I believe it is intended for the first kubuntu release that comes after the release of kde 4, which should be the next one.

So does this mean we should hold off on the Gutsy release, until KDE is not in RC mode?

I noticed that timing too. Seems a little strange to release Gutsy so soon before the final release of KDE 4.

                Re: Question about Future Releases

The release cycles of Ubuntu, and consequently that of Kubuntu, have never been made to sync with KDE, because KDE doesn't have a fixed release cycle (Ubuntu syncs with GNOME's 6-month cycle). So it was just a coincidence that both Kubuntu and KDE 4.0 will be released in the same month.

However, Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon will not be released with KDE 4.0 as the default because there is no assurance that KDE 4 will be released on schedule. And even if it were to be released on schedule, it could not be included immediately into a stable release because of Feature Freeze and stuff. There will, however, be respinned CD's and/or a separate repository for KDE 4.0 packages.

Sad to say, Kubuntu 8.04 will also not ship with KDE 4.0 as the default. Kubuntu 8.04 will be an LTS (Long Term Support) release, which requires very stable versions.

That's a long time to wait for KDE 4.

There will be KDE 4.0 packages/CD's. It will not be installed by default only. That's the only difference.

A release that has KDE 4.0 installed by default? Yes a long wait. But worth it. KDE 4.0 doesn't not promise to deliver all the things that KDE 4 will offer. Although it will be a stable release, it will be the first stable release in a completely new KDE. It's bound to have some things not completely ironed out or some new features still not implemented fully.

                      Yeah, that's understandable.
