Was trying to get away from installing Kubuntu first but it looks like it's may be necessary.

I guess I could install Neon first, add Kubuntu repos and get my non-qt software from there.

While the KDE bits may be similarly named, the rest of the core Ubuntu bits are the problem areas.
What kubuntu repos would you add to neon, and why? Do you mean some kubuntu specific PPAs, or the stock Ubuntu package sources that neon and Kubuntu already uses by default?

I was not aware Neon added Ubuntu sources until oshunluvr shared his sources. Default repos will do just fine; I was wondering where Neon users got GTK apps

I added the Kubuntu backports to my KDEneon install among some other PPAs. Hasn't caused any issues here. Frankly, this is the least troublesome install I've ever had.

and just for the one more of it ,,,,,,, I just added the neon /dev/stable repo to a Kubuntu-16.04 install ,,,and thats where I got my Neon ,,,,I can install anything in the repos I have GTK or whatever ,,,,,,,main sources.list

Neither. We figured out adding a Neon repo to Debian wouldn't work, so I'll install Neon and get my GTK stuff from Ubuntu repos

After all this discussion (thank you all) I've decided to wait a little bit. Before Debian's change freeze I was getting updates about five days after Neon, and that's acceptable. Gonna wait and see what happens after Jessie is released because Sid should catch up quickly

Again, thanks, all - if Debian won't do what I want after Jessie is the new stable then I'll spin up a Neon installation.

Well, it was a four-hour process but it's done. Running Neon Dev Unstable now.

Tried to upgrade Sid just for fun; it didn't work. Dependency hell

Blew KDE away, booted to openbox and downloaded the unstable .iso which ran fine as a live image but the installer segfaulted, even after a couple of tries.

Went back to the drawing board, downloaded the user edition, installed that and upgraded it to unstable. What took all the time was reading through my 3,000 line dpkg dump and reinstalling all the non-KDE stuff but it's all installed and seems to be working fine now

Wasn't too bad, really. I was well-prepared for things to Just Blow Up

I did have kind of a fancy idea, though. I run a nightly dpkg dump which was really helpful; I think I'm gonna take tonight's dpkg dump, save a copy and edit out everything except the applications I need that aren't KDE. Then I can just load that up, do a dselect-upgrade and done.
