What followed was a series of errors relating to the failure to rebuild nvidia drivers for the -90 kernel.
But, the update actually moved my installation from the -38 kernel to the -40 kernel:
5.11.0-40-generic #44~20.04.2-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 26 18:07:44 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
so the errors relating to the rebuilding of the nvidia kernel objects for -90 kernel didn't affect my nvidia 390.144 driver when I rebooted after the update. And things are normal:
