Customize plasma desktop theme

A short how to set the panel background picture with the plasma desktop effects on. The default Air theme has a transparent panel.

Using KDE 4.7.2.

Copy the default plasma theme (Air) from the /usr/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/default to the ~/.kde/share/apps/desktoptheme/Example.


Open the ~/.kde/share/apps/desktoptheme/Example/metadata.desktop. After editing:

1. Using a slice (scaled to 62x1050, my screen is 1680x1050) of the http://www.backgroundpictures.org - > abstract -> Fool's Road

2. Opening the ~/.kde/share/apps/desktoptheme/Example/translucent/widgets/panel-background.svgz with a vector graphics editor (Inkscape).

Rename the existing north/east/south/west-center id. I'm having the panel in the left. I'm renaming the west-center to old-west-center.

3. Importing an image file. Set the object id to west-center. Save the panel-background.svgz.

4. System Settings > Workspace Appearance > Desktop Theme...
