Thanks! That's very useful. It should be mentioned that there are also SEVERAL OTHER managers for ".deb" packages that the adventurous may try. For a while, I was using an app called wajig (it's in the repos), which claimed to do all sorts of other system management tasks as well, but I always come back to Synaptic.
