How to install Flash, Java, and Mplayer on your Gutsy 64-bit system

First, the good news -- you can have all the above capabilities in your browser while running 64-bit Kubuntu Gutsy.

Now, the other news -- not with Konqueror.

So, assuming you can make a choice between Firefox, Swiftfox, Flock, or Iceweasel, here is how to "get flashy":

    1. Download the file "ff32-3in1-5.tar.gz" to your desktop from here: http://home.comcast.net/~ubuntume/ff32-3in1-5.tar.gz
    2. "Extract here" (unzip the file to your Desktop) -- it will make a folder there named "ff32-3in1"
    3. If you already have Firefox, Swiftfox, or Iceweasel installed on your 64-bit system, open Adept or Synaptic, mark it for removal, and "apply" to remove it.
    4. Open your Konsole, and
    Code:
    cd Desktop/ff32-3in1
    5.
    Code:
    ./3in1
and you will be asked for your Super User password
    6. The script will begin, and the question will come up as to whether you want to install the version for Dapper, Edgy, or Feisty. Choose Feisty (Option 3).
    7. The next question asks you to choose from 6 options, including Swiftweasel for either Intel or AMD, 32-bit Firefox, Flock, Iceweasel, or "base installation". Hmmmm, I wonder if that base installation would support Konqueror? I chose "Firefox".
    8. After running that part of the installation, the script will ask you, sequentially, whether you want Flash, Java, and MPlayer. Of course you do, so enter "1" for each of these.
    9. That's it -- upon completion of the script, your new flash-enabled browser will be available in your KMenu>Internet menu.

On mine, it didn't put a Firefox logo on the icon. Doesn't bother me. If someone knows how to restore the logo to the icon, please feel free to add that tidbit here.

And a big THANK YOU to Kilz for contributing the script to the community!

      Hi
I followed your instructions to the tee, and everything installed perfectly fine. The problem I'm having now is that when I try to open Firefox32, it won't open at all. It will attempt to load, but will stop and just disappear as if I hadn't told it to open.

      Any suggestions?

Well, I guess you can color me embarrassed, at this point.

Before the Tribe 6 updates (yesterday), the nspluginwrapper worked great on Gutsy. Somehow, the Tribe 6 update has broken it, and there is no known fix, yet.

Sorry -- I'm out of business too, as far as flash and java goes. I had to install the 64-bit Firefox, and am now browsing with no flash available.

I assume that we're only a few weeks, at most, from a Gutsy release that includes a properly-functioning nspluginwrapper. Maybe sooner .... :P

Heh true that. At the least by the end of October I'm sure everything will be a-ok. For now I'll just wait it out. Thanks anyways though.

Good news -- Gutsy 64-bit repository now has the package "flashplugin-nonfree" which will take care of the problem.

              Hi Dibl,

the "flashplugin-nonfree" package does indeed solve Flash issue, but how about java ? It did not solve it for me although I have also the following packages installed :

              j2re1.4.-mozilla-plugin
              sun-java6-bin
              sun-java6-jre

              Any ideas ?

mate, I seem to have konqeror working fine. Try installing klash to get flash working in konqueror. Then refresh the plugins or reboot.

Here is the link where you can verify whether Java Runtime Environment is working within your browser (Firefox in my case) :

                    http://java.com/en/download/installe...tect=jre&try=2

In my case it is not working.

In top right of the page I see button "Install Missing Plugins..." When I click it Firefox informs me that Java Runtime Environment plugin is available and Clicking "Next" button informs me that No plugins were installed. Clicking "Manual Install" brings me to download page. There are installation instructions there, but I am just not able to figure out how to get it installed.

Here it is what is supposed to be done :

To install the Linux (self-extracting) file

                    Follow these instructions:

                    1. At the terminal: Type:
                    su
                    2. Enter the root password.
                    3. Change to the directory in which you want to install. Type:
                    cd <directory path name>
For example, to install the software in the /usr/java/ directory, Type:
                    cd /usr/java/

Note about root access: To install the JRE in a system-wide location such as /usr/local, you must login as the root user to gain the necessary permissions. If you do not have root access, install the JRE in your home directory or a subdirectory for which you have write permissions.
                    4. Change the permission of the file you downloaded to be executable. Type:
                    chmod a+x jre-6u2-linux-i586.bin
                    5. Verify that you have permission to execute the file. Type:
                    ls -l

                    etc...

OK - I am stuck at the very first step : typing "su" in terminal and providing my password afterwards informs me of "Authentication failure" and that the system is "Sorry". I am pretty much sure that my password is correct.

Well I guess these instructions need to be somehow adjusted for Kubuntu distribution. Can anybody describe exactly what steps shoud be taken in Kubuntu to get it installed ?

                      Try
                      Code:
                      sudo su
and then tell us how the java plugin works, please and thank you.

Thanks Dibl, sudo su really helped and I have managed to follow rest of the instructions. I have installed JRE under /usr/local folder. However, even after restarting Firefox, I am still not able to pass the test through the link provided above.

Something more probably still needs to be set up in the Firefox.

According to instructions provided here :

                        http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html#Java

"Make a symbolic link to libjavaplugin_oji.so in your Mozilla Plugins directory. Use the copy located in the plugin/i386/ns7 directory of JRE 5.0 or later, or plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32 if you are using JRE 1.4.2."

The question now is : how do I do the "symbolic link" ?

I have solved the symbolic link issue by following instructions here :

                          http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#14

I should have read it more carefully.

However, there are still open issues :

                          1. If I install jre-6u3-linux-amd64.bin file, then I do not see plugins directory in the folder where I have installed JRE (it is just not there nor in the subfolders), so I am not able to create the symbolic link.

                          2. If I install jre-6u3-linux-i586.bin file, then the plugins directory IS there and I am able to create the symbolic link - however Firefox is still not recognizing JRE.

Any suggestions ? Does anybody have java running under 64-bit Firefox ?

                            1) anybody have flash running well? I need to re-install flashplugin-nonfree after each reboot in order to make it work.

                            2) Is it right that Firefox does not automatically detect and installs the right plugins?

                            3) And does anybody else also experience that Firefox is much slower than before?
Once your problem is solved please edit the first post of your topic and add [SOLVED] in front of the subject. In that way, others can benefit from your experience!
