Dolphin not reporting correct file sizes inside ntfs partitions

It seems that Dolphin is not able to correctly report the sizes of files and folders inside said partitions. I have to hit the refresh key on the properties window until Dolphin "guesses" the correct size. This only happens when I select large groups of files/folders. The problem with this is that if I try to move/copy large groups of data from the ntfs partition not everything gets transferred. I can circumvent this issue by just doing my transfers from a terminal. Distro is Kubuntu 12.04 with KDE 4.9.1 (issue was also present in 4.8) with the ntfs-3g driver. Anyone experienced a similar issue before?

I haven't noticed such a problem (and I regularly use ntfs partitions).

What does it report? Are the sizes missing or are they actually wrong? Give some examples.

If they're on networked file shares that makes a big difference, but locally attached volumes should be fine.
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

It reports a random different size every time I hit refresh. It eventually gets the right size, but if I hit refresh it again displays the wrong size. Say I have a group of files adding up to 45GB, Dolphin would read them as 38GB one time, 35GB the next, and so forth. This is a big problem because I can never make accurate file transfers with Dolphin. If I read these same group of files from a terminal I get the rigth size every time. These are local volumes by the way.

Are you referring to individual files, or is the error only with the total size of a group of files? Maybe I haven't paid so much attention to this.

Are you getting the size from the information panel (F11) or the status bar at the bottom (should be the same information)? Also, is it for the whole folder or are you selecting specific files? - when I press refresh any selection of folders is lost, so I assume it's the whole folder.

Individual files are okay. Even large iso files are reported correctly. This happens when I select a bunch of files/folders. The info I'm getting it from the Properties window (right click, properties).

Well, this seems to be a Dolphin feature. Tried Fedora, OpenSuse, and Debian and all their KDE desktops with Dolphin do the same. Well crap.

Perhaps it's worth filing a bug against Dolphin.

I've often noticed that Dolphin updates its file count and total size a few times while scanning a directory - one you've just changed into, or after a bulk change (new / moved files). Which is sensible, I suppose. But sometimes it stops after a few updates without completing. This could be a bug?

Also, there's a known issue affecting some people that Dolphin doesn't automatically update when directory contents have changed - see e.g. Dolphin doesn't update view if new files are added • KDE Community Forums
