talk about a STRICT forum! lol

I was converting some vids today and terminal said that ffmpeg was deprecated and that I should change to avconv.

It has complained before but I didn't do anything so I thought I'd install it and didn't find it in the repos, so I searched for the ppa and ran across a forum comparing the two and found a thread that had been closed because.....

    closed as primarily opinion-based

Soooooo I guess that, even though it was not a "good" question, apparently at least a FEW people thought it, and maybe the two responses, were'nt exactly linburger cheese!

Glad THIS forum is not quite so strict! lol

Dittos. When my children were growing up they understood that NO topic was off the discussion table. Fighting and name calling were not allowed, but no topic was forbidden.

Let's see if that is correct.

Edit: It's not. Some people are allowed to spread political propaganda. But others are not allowed to express a different opinion.

askubuntu is NOT a forum, really. While it could be argued what is opinion and what is answer, the statement for the removal/holding/closing is a stock boilerplate the the stackexchange software used at askubuntu (and many other similar sites).

I think that these sites are attempting to focus on purely technical issues, ie problems and solutions. Hence the request to rephrase a question.
I believe that askubuntu soon, if not already, will supplant ubuntuforums as the main way users get assistance, as it seems to be way way more successful.

Was guessing, but I'll bet for sure it is a stack exchange site

The original issue (ffmpeg vs. libav) is not really a "forum moderation" problem. It is more of a "split the church" problem: http://blog.pkh.me/p/13-the-ffmpeg-libav-situation.html

As you can see after absorbing the political aspect of it, there is unlikely to be a ton of objective discussion of this topic by anyone who actually knows a lot about it.

Yeah, I also take exception to the false propaganda of some bit of software or other being labeled as "deprecated" in favor of some other software. This is often false advertising, IMO.

It's like when a virus-peddler tries to sell you (or convince you to install) a "virus scan."

There's something quite unethical about that...
