HP Project Moonshot and Ubuntu Server

I've seen an advert for HP's new server that is pointed at "cloud servers" the last few days and was wondering if there was any particular OS associated with it.

Turns out that Ubuntu is probably going to be a major player:

The new age of connected devices is completely changing the way enterprises design, deploy and manage servers. This week HP disrupted the industry by announcing the new HP Moonshot System and providing an architecture that demonstrates and embodies that change.

Ubuntu is the only OS integrated and fully operational across the complete Moonshot System, covering x86 and ARM chip technologies, delivering scale out innovation in partnership with HP.

Canonical has been involved in the development of HP Project Moonshot from its inception. As a founding member of HP’s Pathfinder Innovation Ecosystem, Canonical recognized the emerging Hyperscale trend early on. We understood that advances in chip design, software and networking are enabling a new paradigm of massive scale out technology and have made investments over the last five years to support and optimise for low power chips from both ARM and x86.

Building on the already strong scale out capabilities of Ubuntu Server, our Hyperscale team continues to develop key features in Ubuntu meeting the needs of Hyperscale customers.

The reality is that today, Ubuntu – with its cross-architecture scale out capabilities, Landscape Systems Management, and Juju orchestration tools – is perfectly suited to support Hyperscale requirements across the management and orchestration layers of the OS.

We are delighted that our relationship with HP is deepening with HP Moonshot. “A new wave of workloads demand breakthrough efficiencies in density, energy, and operational costs which can be scaled to a customer’s IT environment,” said Paul Santeler, vice president and general manager, Hyperscale Business Unit, HP. “Canonical has been working with HP for the past two years on HP Moonshot, and with Ubuntu, customers can achieve higher performance with greater manageability across both x86 and ARM chip sets.”

HP Moonshot is the world's first software defined server,

the HP Moonshot servers are designed in mind with specific workloads, in order to deliver optimum performance; the servers share networking, storage, cooling, power and management.
Paul Santeler, Vice President and General Manager, Hyperscale Business Unit HP, affirmed:

"Canonical has been working with HP for the past two years on HP Moonshot, and with Ubuntu, customers can achieve higher performance with greater manageability across both x86 and ARM chip sets".

Canonical's push for "cross platform" seen in a new light as it were.

Soooo all of the blogosphere rants about ARM and Ubu a year or so was just......blogosphere ranting and missed what was really going on.

And.... a cash inflow to canonical from HP.

I am sure that there are others here who are actually knowledgable about this, and I am NOT! lol...., if they would care to chime in it would probably be interesting reading for the forum members.
