    Folding@Home

I joined the Kubuntu Linux folding at home team because I use Kubuntu Linux. The website link for the team is http://kubuntuforums.net/ but no one on the team is doing anything. I have just joined and am already ranked first on the team. It is for a good cause and I think it is has been a pretty sad effort by the Kubuntu forum community as everyone has just given up.

      Re: Folding@Home

Folding at home is no longer on BOINC. hopefully you're not trying to do it through BOINC.

Thst would explain why you're the only one, if you were. LOL.

He was at the right place, he just inadvertantly posted the URL for this forum, instead of the fah website.

I decided to use my spare CPU cycles and bandwidth to help out. It's running in a Konsole.

          Re: Folding@Home

A few years ago I ran BOINC with a few projects including Folding@Home on four PCs in my home. It ran invisibly in the background so I, uh, forgot about it! Anyway, one day it apparently quit working on all computers. My electric bill for that month was curiously lower, and even lower for the next month. Eventually I figured out it was because, without BOINC, my computers were going to sleep. I calculated that running BOINC was raising my electric bill about $250 a year. With a somewhat heavy heart, I uninstalled it.

There's plenty of discussion across the 'tubes about the power consumption of these distributed computing projects, and it's definitely a YMMV thing, what with all the variables: electricity cost, power supply size and efficiency, CPU/core count, hard drive spinning... Plus, if you run them on computers at the office, there's the possibility you might get fired and sued!

I'm still of the mind that these projects are noble efforts -- more so for the ones searching for disease cures, less so for the ones searching for little green men. I wish they were less costly to run, though.

            Re: Folding@Home

If I left my notebook on running fah for the 8 hours I usually sleep it would cost about $175 per year extra. Add about $80 per year for my netbook and I'd be at $250 per year as well.

That case you cite, almost 10 years old, is a classic example of overzealous prosecutors and clueless administrators. IF those work stations were turned off it would be one thing, but if most or all were left on all day using a screen saver that computes pipes or flying toasters that wastes the electricity, something like folding home would be a good use of the wasted power. But, for the 500 workstations where I retired from, the costs would be around $80,000 per year for the night-time use of the computers!!! That kind of expense would require administrative approval, which I doubt would be forthcoming.

I read somewhere that the power consumed by computers in the USA is about 3% of the country's total electric bill.

Sorry for the old thread revival,

The Sandfod.edu page reports the following for Team Kubuntu Linux:

              Report generated on 14:43:58 April 26, 2014
Date of last work unit 2012-06-16 21:02:26

The inactivity in the past ~ 2 years may be the reason why the team's stats can't even be found on extrmeoverclocking or kakaostats.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not preaching. It's perfectly understandable for people to be concerned about their power bill. I'm surviving two cancers, so I'll contribute. I respect all personal choices. [FWIW, my cpu is constantly between 50 and 60- centigrades because of this, with a CoolerMaster liquid-based cooler and using only 4 out of 8 virtual processors.]

I'll see about switching from my current TeamUbuntu to the Kubuntu team, but it won't help the "collegiate competition" between teams, as individual stats don't transfer from team to team. Of course, that's not what matters.
