    OpenOffice FORKED!

    http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osr...ets-Forked.htm

    And none too soon!

I suspect that Ellison already has his lawyers sifting through OOo code to separate out that which is NOT under the GPL or other free licenses so that he can demand license fees for the use of OOo.

The new fork is titled, aptly, LibreOffice, which I will now refer to as LOo.
The new effort has the backing of all major Linux distributions, including Red Hat, Novell and Ubuntu, as well as the support of the Free Software Foundation (FSF).
    ...
"We've taken a different approach with LibreOffice, instead of having patches floating around against the Oracle version of OpenOffice, we are the new upstream," Meeks said. "We're shipping a beta on day one and there are a number of things that need to be fixed."
You can see the LibreOffice website here.

dibl also posted something about it in Geek News OOO >>> LibreOffice.

I guess this makes my fears concerning Oracle's plans for OpenOffice.org to vanish once and for all.

Just read this myself and was going to post! Yep, no big surprise and thank goodness. I hope maybe VirtualBox can do the same. I know not all of it is Open Source but they need to fork as well. My how Oracle has shown its colors!

EDIT: Downloading the Beta now and will remove OpenOffice.

          Re: OpenOffice FORKED!

I was waiting for this too.

The first thing Ellison did after he bought Sun was to put a $9,000 per 100 license fee on OOo plugins to Office, minimum 100. That would, effectively, eliminate OOo as a valid format option for Office users in Windows. Ballmer probably rejoiced in that news. Now, perhaps, a free LOo plugin can be offered for Office users.

                  Re: OpenOffice FORKED!

In exploring the unpacked deb packages I noticed a subdirectory, "en-US/desktop-integration/" (my eyes are getting bad! ) and when I cd to that directory and issued "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" I found, upon completion, a full set of menu options in the "Office" menu!

I've been playing with a bunch of LOo files and it is working perfectly. The only thing I haven't found yet is a PostgreSQL driver. I may try the OOo driver.

All is well in the garden!

Installed and seems to run smoothly! Glad to get rid of that one Oracle logo!
