Hello,
I've installed Kubuntu 24.10 recently in a desktop that previously had Kubuntu 23.10 installed (I performed a clean installation).
This desktop has one internal SSD (where I have /boot, swap, / and /home partitions) and also a second internal HDD with additional storage for backup and media. I also use an additional external HDD. The HDD is a SEAGATE EXOS.
The issue I'm having is that if I leave the desktop unattended, when the HDD are inactive for some time, they "disappear" from the system (by disappear I mean that its device entry, /dev/sdb1, disappear from the /dev directory, and If I run the KDE Partition Manager, it doesn't show the device). I have to shutdown and turn on the desktop to have the device in the system again (a restart is not enough).
It looks to me that when the HDD powers down (as all respectable HDD should do to avoid wasting power and to avoid breaking), Kubuntu removes the device as if it doesn't exist, and never powers it up again. This is new in this version of Kubuntu, as it worked fine in the past.
Some additional information:
* When the desktop enters into sleep state, the HDD will disappear. I've disabled the sleep option, but the problem still happens.
* Looks like if I have a dolphin window open in any folder in the HDD, the problem does not occur (cannot say it for sure, but looks like this could be a workaround). Probably a bad one as it might mean that the disk doesn't power down.
* The same setup with Kubuntu 23.10 did not have the issue (it went to sleep and when reactivated HDD will work just fine).
* The disk is in good working order (no bad sectors, SMART status OK).
* I had a look to the journal trying to find error messages related to disk, but found none.
I've run out of ideas to test. Any suggestion as to the reason of this problem, or what can I do to fix it, or even where to look for ideas? Let me know if there is some additional information that might be helpful for the diagnose.
Thank you beforehand for any help you can provide.
Jose
