I'm using an integrated Intel ALC1200 based sound card with s/pdif (IEC958) connection. The card itself seems to be working fine - every application (KDE or non-KDE) can output audio. But I'm unable to control the audio volume of KDE-based applications (e.g. Amarok) with kmix. Where should I start looking for a solution?

Re: Can't control KDE sound volume with kmix
Start by opening kmix mixer (click on the panel icon) and then Setting > Configure Channels.
Add channels and play with the sliders until to find which one controls your volume correctly. You'll also find lots of "dead" or unused channels, those you can remove.
Once you've found the correct channel, then do Settings > Select Master Channel and pick it.

I can use the "pcm" channel to control mplayer, youtube etc., but there is no way to find a channel that affects KDE applications.
I'm kind of stuck.
By the way, kmix worked just fine with Debian Lenny and KDE 3.5
