Xorg black screen after update

Not sure if this belongs in the hw section.

Updated using auto update last night. One of the new packages was xorg something or other IIRC. Now when X is run, I only see a cursor on a black background instead of the login screen. I can enter my pwd and it will go into KDM (I can tell because I hear the startup noise). So it's purely a problem with X. I've tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg with no results. I've tried Xorg -configure also with no results.

I can get graphics if I set vga=ask on the GRUB menu, and then choose 311 (640x480x16 VESA). I've messed around with my xorg.conf file with no results, but I'll keep trying.

My graphics chip is an Intel G41. I am using the xorg intel driver. If I can figure out a way, I will post my xorg.conf file and my xorg log.

Got it fixed :
added "nosplash vga=795" to kernel options in GRUB
also added "Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"" to display 16 and 24 bit color depths under the screen section of xorg.conf

wish I'd read this earlier, I just got done reinstalling, configuring my 9.10 install because of this. Not that I had a chance in hell of fixing much less finding what you did. Thought it was something I did. I have another 9.10 install on a CRT which was problem free, which further confused me. Now I'll be ready when it happens again
