    Strange behavior in text console

I have noticed over the last week or so that the text console (i.e. CTRL-ALT-F2, etc) is behaving strangely. If I login and try to sudo something, it won't accept my password. I type it in and hit Enter, and it just sits there. Repeated pressing of enter eventually brings up the incorrect password message. If I do this enough times, eventually I can get in. Also, if instead of, for example, 'sudo service kdm stop' I do a 'sudo -i' , it takes the password right away.
But, if I try to run vim to edit a file, it spits out a bunch of slop, and gives me the 'hit CTRL-D to continue' prompt.
I tried booting with the previous kernel, same problem. Also, sudo works just fine from konsole inside kde.
    Very strange.
