    Can't shutdown from KDE environment

I am running Kubuntu 9.10 on a 64 bit computer

    When I startup I get:

KNotify - The KDE Crash handler appear
    details : Knotify4 PID: 1787 Signal: 6 (Aborted)

If I try and Run Amarok I get:

KNotify - The KDE Crash handler appear
details : amarok PID: 2009 Signal: 11 (Segmentation fault)

If I try to shutdown or restart from Kickoff Application Launcher I get:

KNotify - The KDE Crash handler appear
    details : Knotify4 PID: 1851 Signal: 6 (Aborted)

The only way I can shutdown or reboot is using the shutdown command in a terminal session.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Mog

I had that sometimes, if you *don't mind to loose all your kde configurations* then what i did was:

    switch to a console Alt+F2
    login
    cd ~
rm -Rf .dbus .config .fontconfig .fonts.conf .gconf .gconfd .gnome2 .gnome2_private .gtkrc-2.0-kde4 .gvfs .kde .kderc .local

This removes all your kde + gnome configs, then i login on the gui side and usually kde generates all those configs again and they work (at least for me)

I know this isn't a pretty way to fix things but works for me since i don't do much of costumization over the defaults.

To reconfigure kde (which might provide a fix):

From within dolphin select view/show hidden files.

You will see a file called .kde. Rename it .kde.old (or something similar) - DO NOT DELETE IT as depending on the applications you use it may contain data as well. Then reboot or logout. On the new login a new .kde folder will be created and you will have a cleanly configured kde. Any application configs or data that is stored within the .kde can be copied from old to new.

If that has not fixed it, what version of KDE are you running?

Sorry for the delay in posting, on holiday

No that didn't fix it. I'm using KDE 4.3.2 with Ubuntu 9.10 on a 64 bit Amd box.

Any further help would be greatly appreciated

Are you logging in with gdm or kdm?
If you installed ubuntu first, and then added kubuntu-dekstop, you are probably using gdm, and you cannot shut down from kde under these circumstances. You have to logout, then shutdown from the gdm login screen.

No, I installed Kubuntu from a fresh install with 9.10.

Not sure what is going on, then. You might try installing the kshutdown program. Another thing to check would be in SystemSettings > Advanced > Login Manager > Shutdown and make sure that Under Allow Shutdown, the Local drop box says "everybody". Also, in the "commands" section you should have /sbin/halt listed in the shutdown option. Make sure that /sbin/halt in fact exists, and try it from a text console, sudo /sbin/halt . Otherwise, you could probably point it to /sbin/shutdown -h now .

All the programs exist, and the settings are correct. Still doesn't work.

                I guess I'll have to re-install Kubuntu

I would try reconfiguring the kernel first.

                  sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-$(uname -r)
                  sudo update-initramfs -u

                  then reboot

                    Still no luck I'm afraid.

odd how it all started to happen at the same time as Amorok not working *points for initial posting*

                    cheers anyway

                      Are you still using 4.3?

If so, I would try upgrading to 4.4 as an alternative to reinstalling 9.10 at this stage, especially with 10.04 being only 3 weeks away. 4.4 does really seem to have ironed out loads of wrinkles - perhaps that will be one of them. Certainly worth a go first.

Installing 4.4 seems to have ... well I don't get an error any more, but the taskbar isn't there anymore either. I have to start applications by hitting ALT+F2 and typing in their name.

I can shutdown, but I have to CTRL+ALT + DEL and select shutdown

                        Amarok still won't work though..

I really don't want to do a fresh install because of the admin overhead with settings so hopefully the upgrade to 10.4 will sort it.

Try this (although you will have to reset your wallpaper etc)

Open dolphin and select view/show hidden files. Then rename the file /home/.kde/share/config and then reboot. You should get a fresh desktop.

It will also reconfigure Amarok and might just solve that too. Don't delete the file until everything works to your satisfaction

I know I've already mentioned this of course.

I had already gone slightly over what you suggested and renamed the whole .kde folder (as suggested in a previous post) and rebooted so it reconfigured the lot and still it didn't work

Just curious ... did both your iso and your burned cdrom pass the md5sum checks?

Before I would reinstall using the same CD, I'd re-download the iso and check the md5sum on it. After I burned it at 8x or less I'd boot it and run the LiveCD menu option to check its integrity before I use it to reinstall Kubuntu.
