New install nodesktop just a blank screen with mouse pointer

    Hi
I have installed 9.10 fresh install not upgrade.
    I have the following problem
Start and choose normal user log in I get the the normal splash screen the desktop starts and then goes to a black screen with the mouse pointer (looks like a blank screen saver) something must be working as I get the startup music and a box asking about deleting pulse audio.
If i choose recovery login and login as root I can startx from the command line and get a working desktop.
/var/log/Xorg.log does not show any problems.
I have tried most of the remedies listed on the forum
    Any help would be appreciated

Re: New install nodesktop just a blank screen with mouse pointer

Hi, I have a similar problem. I installed the program partitionmanager, and the next time I logged in I got the splash screen with the KDE loading animations, but after that no desktop appeared, only the blue background image and some error messages from failed executions of partitionmanager. I don't know whether partitionmanager could actually cause that or whether there's another reason. I'm still able to execute programs, by using Alt+F2, I just don't get the bar at the bottom nor the KDE menu or any of the stuff on the desktop - it just appears as if it's not being loaded for some reason. Kubuntu looks better than ever, but I really wonder how many years I still have to wait until Linux becomes an actually working operating system (no fixes at the console, no additional flash and codec installing).

      Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

What exactly was the problem that required "partitionmanager" as the solution? What kind of operating system was running before you needed to install partitionmanager? What was wrong with it?

Are you suggesting there are other operating systems out there that tolerate random diddling of hard drive partitions while running, with no instability or breakage?

      Bogus, bogus, bogus!

Kubuntu Linux is certainly far from perfect, but this is no legitimate complaint.

@lurch, have a look at #2 on my FAQs in my signature.

        Hi
        Thanks for the reply
I have been using Ubuntu on and off since it started I abandoned Windoze at 98.
I have used Kubuntu exclusivly since Breezy Badger and have not had any real problems.
I have installed XFCE and that works fine.
This is one of the things I like about Linux there is always a way around the problem.
        Thanks

But have you solved the issues stated in your post? If 'no,' please provide us with the specs of your PC, to include the make/model of your video card.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

I didn't even use partitionmanager, just installed it as I said. This should not cause any troubles. It's not even sure that it's the cause, just wanted to mention that too. I had to install partitionmanager in the first place since Kubuntu obviously lacks the "Disk and filesystems" options in the system preferences in order to get your windows partitions mounted the way you want. Yes, this is a legitimate complaint.

              Hi guys,
I have upgraded from Kubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 and I have the same problem.
Boot --> Login --> Splash Screen --> Blank Screen

I just can use ALT+F2 to run application.

              Any idea ?

              thanks in advance

                Hi
I installed XFCE which allowed me to access the desktop and reinstall Evolution and Firefox to access my E-mails etc.
I will pursue this farther tomorrow and post details of my video card etc.

                  Hi
Bright and early on a wet Monday morning in the U.K.

My machine is homebuilt with the following Asrock939A8XM motherboard, ATHLON64 4000+ processor, 2Gib memory, Geforce 7800 GS card 256mb ram and a Dell E173FP display.

                  Further to my problem.
The live c.d. works fine, as does startx from the command prompt in recovery mode I can also log in to the console from the login screen this allowed me to install XFCE.
Installing the XFCE desktop allowed me to access the desktop and after installing Firefox and Evolution the internet and my e-mails.

I did not have any problems with 9.04, I had some effects enabled with 9.04 one of which was exploding windows

This appears to be happening with the startup and the following are the steps that happen.

Start the machine it goes through the steps O.K. until the log in screen.

Enter name and password the Kubuntu splash screen starts and goes through its routine that closes and KDE starts to load it the does the exploding windows trick with the desktop and I am left with a black sreen and a mouse pointer.

                  Best regards

Hi lurch, have you tried to reinstall the kubuntu-desktop package via apt-get in the terminal? This is how I fixed multiple desktop issues.

Re: New install nodesktop just a blank screen with mouse pointer

I had the same problem, however, it only happened after I customized my desktop. I haven't had time to look too much into this, but I am suspecting the plasma theme I was using (Elegance) caused this problem. I deleted my .kde folder and stayed with the default plasma theme (Air). It seems to be working fine (so far).

I have Intel GMA X4500 video card in an HP p6180t machine. Does anyone have this config (any slickdealers ?)

Also, how do I change my plasma theme without having to resort to deleting my .kde folder?

                        Thanks

Re: New install nodesktop just a blank screen with mouse pointer GIVEN UP!

Kubuntu 9.10 blank screen with mouse pointer.
                          Cannot download Gnome with Synaptic.
Ubuntu 9.10 downloads but will not save.
I have been using Kubuntu since Breezy Badger and Ubuntu on and off since it started, but I have had enough and given up and gone for something else.
I want a OS that just works without a lot of problems.
                          sadly

Similar problem here: KDE returns to opening screen while XFCE runs fine (using it to type this).

When I view the KDM log, I get:

What could the new upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic change that would cause this?

                            from lspci:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. KM400/KN400/P4M800 [S3 UniChrome] (rev 01)

I HAVE been having a chronic problem with the video setting "not taking" in Jaunty before this issue. By that, I mean, I can change the display setting and it changes, but only for the current session. For reboots, it reverts back to a high resolution setting with a low refresh rate.

Could permissions on a file be set wrong or randr be choosing something wrong?

                              Hi
I have cured the problem with complete reinstall formatting all partition.
It now works fine I guess it did not like some of the setting in my /home partition.
