SATA DVD - can read DVDs & read/erase CDs, but cannot write!

I have installed Kubuntu Karmik 9.10 64-bit on my second machine, which has two SATA II HDDs & a SATA CD/DVD RW burner. I have problems burning CDs using K3b on Kubuntu 9.10 with a SATA CD/DVD writer. The drive reads CDs & DVDs ok, & will erase CD-RWs, but will *not* write. I'm using Verbatim CDs. So far burned three coasters, so now using Verbatim CD-RWs so at least I can erase them if anything goes awry.

My other machine (which also runs Kubuntu Karmic 9.10) has two SATA II HDDs & a normal PATA CD/DVD burner, & I have no problems with it at all.

The attempt to write to a CD aborts with "Possible buffer underrrun" & "Try a lower speed" (or similar messages).

I've tried this: http://scdbackup.sourceforge.net/k3b_on_cdrskin.html
but cdrskin does not show in the "Programs" menu under 'cdrecord', so I cannot set it as default.

Anyone got any ideas, please?

Re: SATA DVD - can read DVDs & read/erase CDs, but cannot write!

I have had problems similar to that with K3B, and I seemed to cure it by changing the temp directory to one in my home directory. Seems there is a permission issue in the /tmp directory and K3B cannot write to it. Currently I just change it in the burn dialogue each time I burn a disc but I am sure there is a way to set it that way as default. Worth a try anyhow.

1-have you tryed runing the K3b setup utility in K>system settings>advanced>K3bsetup ?

it will make shure K3b has the right permitions .

2-the /tmp directorey must have enuff space to hold the progect!!!

just some Ideas ..............I have had the not enuff space in tmp and the permititions drive me nuts befor
