Re: how to update the codecs??

    Hi

I saw your post. Unfortunately, the software manager in Kubuntu is not working well in Jaunty. Please open the "konsole" application (it is in the KMenu), and type

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install synaptic
After that, Synaptic will be in your menu, and you can use it to install software. Packages with the Ubuntu logo are always preferred, because they are supported by the company behind Ubuntu (Canonical).

Codecs: VLC will install everything it needs, seach for it in Synaptic and install it. In general, there is a meta-package for all the restricted formats:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

It boils down to installing kubuntu-restricted-extras. If you need to add repositories, you will find the info in the help page I just showed.

    Good luck!

You might also want to look for medibuntu package (google it) add to repositories and most of multimedia drivers will be there. That's what I do on my 64bit Kubuntu.

        @imilano
i did as u said but i got these

        swagat@swagat-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install synaptic
        Reading package lists... Done
        Building dependency tree
        Reading state information... Done
Package synaptic is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

Could you please open KPackageKit, edit software sources, and then refresh them? Does that work?

Re: how to update the codecs??

This is unusual, there must be something broken (note that above I meant to say "enable the listed repositories" in kpackagekit)

Could you open a "konsole" from the menu, type this and show the output to us?
              Code:
              cat /etc/apt/sources.list
Also, we need the output of
              Code:
              sudo apt-get update
              and
              Code:
              sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Re: how to update the codecs??

There is an incorrect line in the file, try this

                    sudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list

And remove the line deb http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes (just this one), then save it, close kate, and try again. Now you should be able to install software

(in particular, you'll need to refresh your sources and get the upgrades to the system)

Re: how to update the codecs??

I had the very same error when installing apt-cacher-ng (which works like a proxy server to store all packages on my desktop for installation on all the computers in the house).

For some reason apt cannot reach the ubuntu servers. Are you behind a firewall or proxy?
