    [Resolved] Problems enabling Desktop Cube

this thread has another continuing thread in which the problem is resolved. See http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3106194.0

    Hello everyone,

Today I have tried to enable the desktop Cube on my system. I have installed Compiz Fusion, although I did receive an error. Below is a look at the message I received from synaptic:

E: linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
    E: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.28-15-generic: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
    E: linux-image-generic: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
    E: linux-restricted-modules-generic: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
    E: linux-generic: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

When I open my system settings/Desktop effects and check enable desktop effects, Desktop Cube Animation, I get a pop-up (The KDE Window Manager) that says cannot activate many of my desktop effects. The Cube being one of them. I have included a screen shot of this on the forum. See the link below:

Anyone have any idea how to help me get enabled?

did you try clicking the button that says 'resume composting'?

iirc, the nvidia 5200 is partially supported, but I think it should work.

      Re: Problems enabling Desktop Cube

It says here you need the 173.14.18 nVidia driver:

      http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...d655a&t=122606

The process to manually install an nVidia driver is here:

      http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...4892#msg164892

However, if you can do Alt-F2 "nvidia-settings" and the nVidia settings utility pops up, then maybe the only thing lacking is to enable compositing. If that is the case, Alt-F2 "kdesudo kate" (give your password when asked) and then with Kate running in root mode, open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and you might find it lacks the compositing option. The very last stanza should look like this:

      Section "Extensions"
      Option "Composite" "enable"
      # Option "RENDER" "disable"
      EndSection

      Hope this helps.

        Re: Problems enabling Desktop Cube

        Thanks for the help.

I have installed the new driver and added the last stanza to my xorg.config file recommended by dibl. I have also turned on resume composting.
It then says, Composting has been disabled by another application. (not sure what app this could be)

after I apply the setting with "Desktop Cube Animation"

I get the message stating that the effects could not be activated.

I appreciate you showing me the way to install that NVIDIA driver.

        Any other ideas?

          dibl@
Correct me if I'm wrong, but one isn't required to install Compiz in 9.04 (or 8.10 IIRC). Isn't it supposed to be natively part of the desktop effects? Is it possible that the stated conflict is due to having installed Compiz?

I uninstalled compiz-fusion, but received an error message during the uninstall. I was using synaptic.

I wanted to show you guys the error message during my uninstall
so i installed compiz, just so I could uninstall it & show you guys the error. I'm wondering if it is relevant to why the desktop effects aren't working properly.

              Code:
              ben@ben-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get remove compiz

                Re: Problems enabling Desktop Cube

You have dependency problems and unconfigured packages:
                linux-generic depends on linux-image-generic (= 2.6.28.15.20); however:
Package linux-image-generic is not configured yet.
                linux-generic depends on linux-restricted-modules-generic (= 2.6.28.15.20); however:
Package linux-restricted-modules-generic is not configured yet.
The two bolded packages above are either not installed or remain unconfigured.

                Open a console and type:
                Code:
                sudo dpkg --configure -a
See if these two packages finish being configured. If they do, then run:
                Code:
                sudo apt-get update
                and then:
                Code:
                sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

                    Re: Problems enabling Desktop Cube

It seems like you are missing the kernel headers, so try installing them:

                    linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic
                    linux-headers-2.6.28-15

along with the sources (just to be sure):

                    linux-source-2.6.28

Now try to run the commands snowhog gave you...

On a side note, I do not know know why you want to install compiz in the first place if you all you wanted was the desktop cube since it is included in kwin from the getgo. Just go to system settings->desktop->desktop effects->all effects (make sure compositing is enabled). If you wanted other effects in compiz that are not included in kwin (which there are a few), then I can see your point.

                      ssri,

Thankyou for your reply. I tried installing the packages you recommended. No solution though.

Here is the outcome. It's sort of long...

                      1st

                      Code:
                      ben@ben-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic
                      [sudo] password for ben:

                      Building dependency tree
                      Reading state information... Done
linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic is already the newest version.

5 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 0B of additional disk space will be used.

There's a pattern here. Which kernel are you running -- what does
                        Code:
                        sudo uname -a
                        output?

                          dibl,

Thanks for your help. See Below:

                          Code:
                          ben@ben-desktop:~$ sudo uname -a

I have started a new topic concerning the dependency & configuration issues, since we are no longer on the subject of Desktop Cube.

                          http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3106123.0

Have not yet tried the new suggestions by "ssri" as of yet.

                          Any ideas would be great.

UPDATE: problem was eventually resolved see the thread; http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3106194.0

                            Re: Problems enabling Desktop Cube

You are correct -- we are way off the "Desktop Cube" topic.

However, fyi, you appear to have some sort of "partial" installation of a newer kernel 2.6.28-15-generic, but you are running the prior version, 2.6.28-14-generic. So, if you will either (a) install/reinstall 2.6.28-15-generic, or else (b) sudo apt-get remove --purge 2.6.28-15-generic, I would think other packages will complete their installation and configuration satisfactorily.

FYI, for a couple of reasons, I install and run compiz and leave the *buntu "Desktop Effects" alone.

                            - I want the newer / Beta nVidia driver, not available in "Hardware Drivers"
                            - I like the Emerald window decorator
                            - I don't like the looks of the kwin decorator
                            - I like the Compiz "Extras"
                            - too many times the "Desktop Effects" just doesn't want to work, or provide a cube, on my rig

But, if you can be happy with the driver provided by Hardware Drivers, and the kwin decorator, then Snowhog is correct that you should be able to run the built-in Cube. But first you have to resolve the unconfigured kernel problem.

                            Hope this helps!
