Found this information and thought I'd pass it along in case other people experience window refresh problems when using Compiz with the proprietary NVIDIA driver. Basically, to fix it, open CompizConfig-Settings-Manager, go to the Workarounds tab and turn on "Force synchronization between X and GLX". Works like a charm.
