    Update to KDE 4.2.4 failed

    hi,

I upgraded my kde to 4.2.4 with apt-get, and after that I dont know why, all my applications in the menu are lost, the favorite are always there but applications are emtpy, I noticed also that all file association are lost too if I double click on any file (any kind) it's always ask me to choose an application to open it (when it's ask me to choose application the application list is also empty)

    this is really :-X :-X :-X :-X

so what can I do. I think that I maybe should reinstall this upgrade but I dont know how I can do it to reinstall all KDE package

If you have an other solution I ll be tankful

Re: Update to KDE 4.2.4 failed

If you followed the announcement here you should have been fine:

    http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2.4

Note that you should use Kpackage, the Add/Remove Software function in the KDESystem Settings. The "Settings" menu has the "Edit Software Sources" button that leads you to the dialogue boxes I posted below.

Applying the GPG Keys for the repo is a hassle. Some folks say it is not needed, but my install ran smoother with them. I think I used this guide, or similar:

Note that you can add the repo for Amarok 2.1 too:

    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu jaunty main

My experience has been so positive thus far that I have forgotten about Sabayon (slow on old hardware), openSuse (Yum issues galore) or Mandriva (Not working at all for me).

Re: Update to KDE 4.2.4 failed

These Konsole commands worked for me after I added the ppa repository to sources.list.

      sudo apt-get update
      sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
      sudo apt-get install kde-core

Re: Update to KDE 4.2.4 failed

        hi,

Still dont work, i did dist-upgrade and install kde-core.

I have a kubuntu 9.04, every thing is fine, but when I upgraded to kde 4.2.4, while the installation process started I had a power down of electricity so thats why I think that the istallation is corrupted and thats why I lost all the applications list,

I think that is necessary to RE-install all kde package to correct that, but I dont know how to RE-install all kde package

        thanks

Re: Update to KDE 4.2.4 failed

Ah, that little piece of info that was missing from your first post.... power outage during the upgrade. It sounds like some files were deleted before the poweroutage and before the upgrade process could replace them with the 4.2.4 apps.

Install the XFCE4 desktop as a backup GUI desktop in case something else fails with KDE4.

          Boot into the failsafe terminal.

          Then, do these commands:

          sudo apt-get remove kdelibs5

          sudo apt-get purge kdelibs5

If it asks you to stop KDM say NO.

          That removes KDE4.

          Then, reinstall KDE4:
          sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
          or
          sudo apt-get install kdelibs5 kde4base-data kde4libs-data

Also, re-install specific KDE4 files you added that may have been removed.

            hummm

            sounds tooo risky !,

my kubuntu is not only for my personal but also for business uses, i think i will wait for kde 4.3 for uprade to repair the 4.2.4.

thats what bring to this question how do i do to install a really safe linux : in case of system crach i can reinstall the all distrib without loosing my programs and my files?

            thanks a lot

During the installation process, if you will make a separate /home partition, you can install, delete, reinstall to your hearts desire and all of your files will always be safe.
