    [SOLVED] PPPoE in Jaunty

Hi. I was happily using internet at local internet cafes, just plug a cable in and immediate access.

We got a WiMax connection which uses PPPoE. Checking the forums I found references to using sudo pppoeconf which I used but still can't access the network via this connection.

Now today, back at the local internet, plugging the cable in and Jaunty doesn't recognise the local network, which it used to, so I switched back to Intrepid (dual boot) to access the network and this forum.

    Any ideas on
    1. How to get Jaunty back to recognizing a cable that doesn't require any names, passwords, etcetera
    2. How to get Jaunty to use the PPPoE connection. I'm ashamed that my colleagues with Windows are all using our new connection and I can't yet get it to work with Jaunty.

    Re: PPPoE in Jaunty

Hi, problem resolved but not solved. I used bit torrent on a windows machine to get Ubuntu Jaunty, burned it at 24* using K3B on Kubuntu Jaunty, installed it and my pppoe is working perfectly after downloading a few packages. I had noted in at least two different posts that the Gnome network manager was suggested, even in KDE. I haven't tried Gnome since Dapper, so tried it and it's not bad, in fact it's good, impressive.

I was quite happy with Kubuntu and Jaunty until I tried to connect to our new server with Jaunty and found the KDE network manager great, but only for dhcp and unencrypted wireless. Even getting this going on Ubuntu meant using a windows machine to find an address which none of the windows machines needed. There are still improvements to be made to make connecting to the internet easy.

One thing that impressed me in Gnome was clicking on the ? on the taskbar for help and it opened very quickly with a short list of the most common problems - unlike KDE - and the first on the list was connecting to the internet, exactly what I needed and it told me the missing packages to install. How convenient, it didn't mention the dependencies, but that didn't take too long to get them all and get everything installed.

Wow, I'm happy now, and thinking about upgrading my Kubuntu Intrepid to Jaunty and dual booting Ubuntu and Kubuntu Jaunty. Now that I have a good connection (16kB/s) I'm certainly going to get the Sidux iso and the Karmic and see what else is out there (but not Windows 7). Enough.

      Re: PPPoE in Jaunty

Things are getting better. I finished downloading on my Ubuntu Jaunty via our new pppoe connection the Sidux lite image (about 480MB). It's a live CD based on Debian Sid and has been referred to in a number of the Kubuntu forums, in fact, that is where I first knew that it existed.

I left the freshly burned CD in and rebooted with Sidux. It has a pppoe connection on the menu and it only asks for what's needed: a name for the connection, your username and password, then it connected. Brilliant. Exactly what anyone would want, and all this on a 480 MB CD without downloading a single extra package. I'm impressed.

I copied all of the information from the files in /etc/network/interfaces /etc/ppp/pap-secrets /etc/ppp/resolv.conf and /etc/NetworkManager/VPN connection 1 onto my Kubuntu Intrepid and rebooted. The information in these files is almost exactly the same as my Ubuntu Jaunty which only needed about six files downloaded on another machine to be installed before the internet was working.

        [SOLVED] Re: PPPoE in Jaunty

I found this link today, the problem with pppoe is a bug with the network manager plasma widget
        https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...etwork-manager

With a dsl cable connected, the network manager does not give you that option - only wired, wireless and vpn
both mobile broadband and dsl cannot be accessed, even with a dsl modem plugged in.

Finally, a solution, a how to that works:
