[solved] Kubuntu 9.04 fresh install, X fails (nvidia)

On a freshly-installed Kubuntu 9.04, X fails to start. The X.org log states that this is because:

    Code:
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) No drivers available.
System is a Dell Precision M90 laptop with a Quadro FX 2500M (G71chip) which X appears to correctly identify:

    Code:
    (--) PCI:*(0@1:0:0) nVidia Corporation G71 [Quadro FX 2500M] rev 161, Mem @ 0xed000000/16777216, 0xd0000000/268435456, 0xee000000/16777216, I/O @
This is a clean install, but I was previously running other Kubuntu installs (including 8.04, for the last year) without any problem. (I chose to re-install rather than upgrade, because of the KDE 3 -> 4 change and I thought it would be cleaner and simpler to not have old config files kicking around).

Also, the Kubuntu 9.04 CD booted and ran perfectly well, X started, I had a 24 bit truecolor visual, everything looked fine, so I was very surprised to see this failure after actually installing.

Here is the complete x.org log:

    Code:

Re: Kubuntu 9.04 fresh install, X fails (nvidia)

This looks like you have the xorg.conf file set to load the nvidia proprietary driver but it is not installed. You need to install nvidia-glx-180 and nvidia-180-kernel-source unless your card is older in which case it would require an older version of the driver. Youcan use your favorite GUI package management tool or
    sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-180 nvidia-180-kernel-source
    should do it.

      Thanks for the fast response!

Can't use a GUI package (X not running at all ... command line only) but will try the command line install.

To be clear, I have not edited or changed anything in the config. This is a failure on first reboot after install. Its a pristine system, the only thing I did once X failed was to log into the command line and then cp the xorg logfile to my windows partition so i could post it here.

Will let you know how it goes.
