Error with external USB DVD writer

I am using Kubuntu 9.04 64-bit with an Intel quad-core Q8400 w/4 Gb RAM. I have a Vantec IDE/SATA to USB converter (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812232002) to hook up my IDE LiteOn DVD burner externally. I used the adapter to install the OS so I know it works fine, but it was with a different drive. I thought it might have been an incompatibility between my adapter and my drive... but it does recognize the device. The drive works fine though as an IDE drive, but I only have 2 IDE devices on my mobo, and need to use them both for HDDs.

    Any ideas?
