PCMCIA socket not working properly -> wireless card unusable

    Hallo everybody.
I have a fresh new installation of Kubuntu 9.04 updated with KDE 4.2.4.
My laptop is an old Toshiba A30-303 laptop with a few updates (ram, HD, DVD-RW).
I use wireless internet via a Ralink based Belkin F5D7010 card, inserted into the PCMCIA slot.

The problem is that apparently the PCMCIA socket does not recognize cards. So:
output from "sudo lshw" correctly points out the pcmcia bus with "driver=yenta_carrdbus", "sudo lspci" shows the card but there is no way I can see the card inserted. In fact, when I insert the card in the slot I get kernel message that follows:

"kernel [ 1138.309035] pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: cs: cardbus cards are not supported"

And... iwconfig does not show any wlan0 cards (no wireless extensions to lo, eth0, pan0).

I tried to google a bit...no luck. Any ideas?

To note that I had the card working in my previous LFS installation, the drivers exist and they work without NDISWRAPPER, so I assume it is a problem not with the card itself but with the PCMCIA...

Thanks for your help in advance.

    Matteo

did you insert the card after boot? or boot with it allredey in?

try booting with it allredey in.

Re: PCMCIA socket not working properly -> wireless card unusable

Indeed I tried with it already inserted and the result is unfortunately exactly what I have described. So I really assume it is a sort of bug in the management of PCMCIA bus (the card is not recognised at all, the pccardctrl command shows no card connected unfortunately).

As said, it must be before the real card driver is even considered.

Will try to post the DMESG output as soon as reasonably practicable.

      (now working from another computer)

      Thanks
      Matteo

Re: PCMCIA socket not working properly -> wireless card unusable

Here is the DMESG output. Very last line generated by attempt to extract and re-insert the card. Nothing worked anyway. Really, any help or direction (something to do with IRQ possibly too?) is very appreciated.

Re: PCMCIA socket not working properly -> wireless card unusable [SOLVED]

I googled after realising that it was more an IRQ - related problem rather than a card problem. There was apparently some conflict in assigning the IRQ.
I honestly found the solution in another post.

Solution is to enable ACPI support (albeit the kernel seemed to be able to boot, initially, only if acpi=off was passed)
The two relevant options to pass to kernel that solved my problem are as follows:

          clock=pmtmr nolapic

This solved the problem and now everything (incl. eth0, wlan0, ...) seems to be working.

The card is recognised and hunts for networks.

          regards

          Matteo
