    kde 4.1 slower than gnome?

    Hello everyone

I am having a problem: I'm using kubuntu with kde 4.1 and gnome installed. When I sign with kde the whole system works slower than when I start with gnome.

    I believe it's not a pc problem: amd athlon x2 4400, 2gb ram, nvidia 8500gt 512mb.

My question: is kde 4.1 "slower" than gnome?

I don't have any benchmarks to back up my claim, but that is my impression as well.
To me KDE 4.2 (well, 4.1.85) seems faster than 4.1, but still it does not feel as snappy as GNOME.

Even so, I personally find using KDE a much more pleasant experience.

nvidia cards can have issues with kde 4.1. There are several posts here about this issue you may want to take a look at.

        Absolutly!

But i want to know if there is a personal problem or everybody has the same. I gonna check that nvidia issue...

That's false. KDE 4 is the problem.

              That's fine.

But, if KDE 3.5 was fine (for the most part) for Nvidia video cards, how come all of a sudden they cause problems? I just think it sounds strange to blame hardware for software problems.

It's also not a case of open-source v.s. proprietary either in this case. I already know about that. The problems are *worse* than before and that is my point.

kbunt is getting ever funnier. Quite frankly, I'd be embarrassed to tout my complete and utter ignorance across the web (which I do often enough as it is ) but the last post takes the biscuit!

Back to business: gnome vs kde - on my desktop gnome is a lame duck (even with my NVIDIA card) while KDE4.x (I had it on Kubuntu and now on Arch) is a screamer and works a treat.

On my laptop things look a tad different with both DEs performing about the same.

                the whole system works slower
Could this is more a general impression than based on hard facts? Consider that even if you run fluxbox, OOo, for example, will not come up faster than it does on KDE or gnome. The DE provides an environment but does not afaik interfere with programme - kernel interaction.
Once your problem is solved please mark the topic of the first post as SOLVED so others know and can benefit from your experience! / FAQ

So, everyone who uses KDE should just throw their $200 Nvidia cards in the garbage?

                  Yeah, okay.

Besides, the question is about which is faster? How are you measuring? How fast it is to boot up? Seems like an easy test to find out.

I would suspect KDE takes longer since there are more apps/menus being loaded. Not sure why someone thought that an Nvidia card would be a primary reason to 'bother' KDE in that respect.

Last time I read/used anything to do with Gnome, people were saying it was liked because it was 'simple' and 'uncluttered.'

KDE 4.x uses more resources than gnome. Gnome uses more resources than xfce. Xfce uses more resources than Fluxbox. Pick your poison.

p.s. Enlightenment is out there too -- I'm not sure where it fits in the spectrum.

Re: kde 4.1 slower than gnome?

Since KDE 4 is built almost from the ground up, and contains many "looking-to-the-future" technologies, many bugs in the nvidia drivers have been exposed. In most cases it is not bad code on the part of kde which nvidia users are experiencing. This has been well documented since the 4.0 days. Fortunately, things have been steadily improving with each new release of nvidia drivers.

As you said, kde has its own problems and annoyances, but when someone mentions that they are having display issues and they have an nvidia card, the drivers are usually the first place to look.

I have also noticed that KDE 4.1 is a lot slower then gnome which is why I decided to try KDE 4.2 and ever since the upgrade I find it to be just as fast as Gnome

I just updated to KDE 4.2 RC1 and it seems blisteringly fast to me, even when I am running BOINC in the background.

It must depend upon your hardware. KDE 4.1.3 and 4.2 beta was/is faster on my machine than Gnome. Even with preload installed, applications start up faster in KDE. Also, windows don't skip when being moved as they do in Gnome. Desktop effects work much more smoothly in KDE as well. In Gnome, wobbly windows are slow and will either fall down or rise so that the top window boarder (or window bar?) becomes hidden by the top panel after I let go. I have to right click on the task manager to move the window.

I have an Nvidia video card and 4.0 acted like it didn't exist, which is why I went with Ubuntu originally. Ever since 4.1 it's been fine. Had I started with 3.5, I probably never would have even tried Gnome but I had a choice with Hardy and thought, "of course I want the latest!" despite the warning.

The problem is that I really like the way Gnome is laid out but I like the speed and modern look of KDE. Xfce is about as fast as KDE but it lacks the functionality I'm used to.

I've tried them all. I finally settled on Xubuntu 8.10 with compiz. Everything works fast and smoothly. Let me correct that, I have not tried KDE 4.2. My earlier experiences with 4.1 were frustrating. I just could not get the hang of KDE 4.1. I am still running KDE 3.5.10 on 8.04 in one partition, but I am so happy with the Xubuntu 8.10 I am on the verge of abandoning 8.04 all together. I will probably use that partition to install JJ soon. Dual core AMD64 4000+. Running 64 bit. Nvidis Geforce 6200 Turbo Cache 512 with 177.80.
