How do I cd and execute files?

I need to understand two things...(at the moment that is)...in simple English

1. how do I cd to a folder/file?
and,
2. how do I make a file executable?

All help would be appreciated

Open a console and type:

man cd

for details on the cd (change directory) command

man chmod

for details on the chmod (change file mode bits)

Don't know if you need any of this.
Main focus of my brief how-to is how to navigate the file system.
