Samba share with Windows 98

I posted there about trying to get Windows 98 to connect to Ubuntu, I type in the password and it doesn't go.

Are you using W98 to mount a Samba share? Are you sure that the users smbpassword has been set? We used to have to patch the w98 registry to enable clear text passwords to get it to mount samba shares. I expect that is still true.

I heard 98 is not compatible with the encryption that Ubuntu uses. Would I have to change something on the server (Ubuntu) or client (98)? I would have thought the server, but...

It is called the plain password patch for Windows and Googleing it just now I found a place where you can still get it.

Have you set the smbpassword on the server? To enable a share for user smbuser, run
sudo smbpasswd smbuser
That will create the smbpassword and thereafter the user can change it using smbpasswd.

I changed the password to blank (I was trying to remove it alltogether)

EDIT: I did it and it still didn't work

Can the windows computer find the samba server? Need netbios over tcp/ip enabled and maybe edit smb.hosts, IIRC. If it is trying the samber server should be logging something that might be helpful.

I can detect it, when i connect it asks for a password, and no matter what I put it says I have the incorrect password.

I can connect to 2000 and XP Machines, but not Ubuntu.

On Windows 2000 and XP I was able to connect

You have stumped me. You could install wireshark and sniff the connection to see if W98 is actually sending a plain text password.

Would I install that on Ubuntu or Windows?

I wonder if anyone else here would know, I have been trying things for ages and never got it to work. I wish I could just disable the stupid password alltogether.
