    Networking Windows XP And Kubuntu

    Hi All,

Well I just got the new Kubuntu version on my WD 160 gb external HDD for my Dell Optiplex GX270, well firstly I have this problem As I am using dialup I cant find the drivers for my US Robitics 56k Modem for Kubuntu, so I want to use my network.

    1. I want this computer (Kubuntu) to connect to my other laptop there I set the ip at 192.168.0.1(Kunbuntu PC) but it wont connect, and since this is a dual boot machine (Win XP also) I cant change the IP on the laptop ,because when I boot windows here it wont network. Is there anyway to make the IP adress to work the same for XP and Kubuntu?

    2. After installing Kubuntu on my external HDD, I cant use it nor find it on windows, I want to install some other application on it, does it do this on purpose or something messed up with my pc.

So if you guys can please help me out I would apperciate it!

    Many Thanks,

    Rahul

    1. I am not sure about your setup, if I am correct you have:

Laptop A: connected to internet, dual boot WinXP and Kubuntu (version??)
Laptop B: non-functional modem, Kubuntu (version??), supposed to use shared internet connection from A.

To enable a shared internet connection from kubuntu, you can download firestarter (yes I know, it's a firewall GUI). See second topic on http://www.elijahlofgren.com/networking/

If you setup Internet Connection Sharing in windows, it will use IP address 192.168.0.1 as well. To do this, run "control netconnections", right click on the internet connection you want to share and on the tab "Advanced" run the Network Setup Wizard. XP will try to assign IP addresses to other computers. You can try if Kubuntu can obtain an IP from XP or set a static address (though this seems to be a hassle for many people in KDE4). Then also set the default gateway to 192.168.0.1.

    2. As far as I know it is impossible for windows to read the ext3 filesystem, so you will not be able to find it on windows. Does the USB disk contain any other partitions (NTFS or FAT32?). If it has, I am not sure if I can get you going.

Please let us know how you're doing.
Once your problem is solved please edit the first post of your topic and add [SOLVED] in front of the subject. In that way, others can benefit from your experience!

To get windows to read files on your linux system, assuming you have it formatted to ext2 or ext3, you will need to setup (on windows) a program called: Ext2IFS_1_11a.exe.

      It can be found at:

        Hi ,

Please accept my sincere appologies for not replying at the earliest. My exams were on. Well I am afraid you have got it wrong. See here

Computer A:- Is the one with Kubuntu, and I have set the ip to -192.168.1 ,

Computer B:- Is the one with Windows XP , and has the the IP set by the Internet Sharing Wizard

I am trying to get B to connect to A or vice versa, But B needs to get the internet from A.

however Ill give you idea a go now , since I have time. And do you know where I can find a 56k US Robitics Driver for Ubuntu.

Thank you very much for your Help and Ill let you know soon.

doctordruidphd - Thx I got the program as well.
