Near heart-stopper - during boot got a char mode screen and 'not found'

I've seen that console screen before - when I cooked my nvidia module trying to install 1.20. In *that* instance I was dead in the water. Nothing I did got it to come back.... so I re-installed kubuntu from the ground up and got things working again.

Then an hour ago I installed fluxbox, logged out and reset the server, then logged back in to test the fluxbox install - all OK - BUT - when I logged out and tried to return to KDE, I got the character mode console screen saying something along the lines of 'image not found - resuming normal boot' and then it sat there. But unlike my experience with the bad driver module, after about a minute, the screen blinked several times and finally I got the GUI KDE log-in screen. I made sure I had KDE selected, logged in and all was well.

But that black and white screen nearly gave me a heart attack. I've spent most of the weekend rebuilding the system and I *really* didn't appreciate the joke.

I have no idea what happened - and hope it doesn't happen again. Any comments would be appreciated.

At what point in the restart process? Did this happen before or after the KDM login screen?

After, as I recall. I was a bit surprised.

I have seen this behavior. It happened when I was using an "xforcevesa" boot option, except on my hardware it sometimes failed to start X and gave me the character mode login.

I spent some time experimenting with boot options and found a better one -- vga=837 (one that is not documented anywhere, as far as I can tell). But this is very hardware specific -- meaning your graphics card and your monitor and your default screen resolution. You might want to play around with boot options and see if there is one that is happier with your hardware combination.

I was able to log out, restart my system and boot back into KDE without a problem.

My previous char mode screen incident was following a boot into fluxbox, so perhaps something was 'left behind' from that.

I'll grit my teeth and try a KDE-Fluxbox-KDE sequence and see if it repeats.

          Wish me luck.
