Do I really need a password to get in???

Qqmike I am back with a totally different problem.
I get to the user name and password and they are not accepted even though I have them on a piece of paper in front of me. Yes i know did I really type in the same username and password or is there a typing error.
My question now is - Do i really need to sign in? I am the only one to use this computer so cannot see a need. Next is there a way to get passed this and setup a new username and password or do I have to format and reinstall??

How many characters is your password? By default, Kubuntu has a minimum size set - I think it's four.

It seems I have to reinstal Kubuntu because all the answers require the desktop which is difficult since I cannot get passed the login window. I have noted and read all your suggestions and next time I will make a special
note of all my entries. I found the reading very interesting.
I did try upper and lower case even going one key either side of typing a list of numbers but a reinstall seems the quickest way out of this. Many thanks for your help.

many thanks a very useful page. I did however reinstal kubuntu and made a copy of my details together with case settings and careful note of the letters.

Always a good idea. If you have a desire to start off on the right foot, and have a positive experience with Linux/Kubuntu, I strongly suggest you continue doing this - keeping notes on what you do. I do, and it is a very handy practice.

You can set Kubuntu up so it automatically logs a user in when it runs.
Since you're the only one who will be using the computer it would be useful.

System Settings > Advanced > Login Manager > Convenience (7)

Check the "Enable auto-login" box and select the user you want. Hit Apply, then OK.

Removing the main pssword is a stupuid idea, even if you are the only user its just better security practice.
Wonder why windows XP had so many security issues?
Auto login was a big main cause.

I had the same problem, or at least the same symptom.

It happend after upgrading kernel, might not be the reason, a lot of other stuff got upgraded at the same time and I had custom GRUB which I got asked if I wanted to change.... Anyway, after reboot I got some warning msg and then after I entered my pass it kept coming back to that user&pass dialog.
Msg was something about not being able to do something with .ICEauthority. Luckily in GRUB i still had older kernel version option and it allowed me to log in, so I found the file in /home/user/.ICEauthority and changed it's permissions to read-write and that did the job. After reboot I was able to enter my username & pass and enter Kubuntu instead of just getting the same user&pass dialog again and agian.
