Hangs on boot have to yse space bar

I upgraded my laptop HP Pavilion dv9730us from 8.04 to 8.10. I did a clean install of all but /home. The computer did not do this with 8.04 but now soon after usplash starts everything stops. The bar doesn't move. If I hold down the space bar it movies & I must hold it down 20-30 seconds then I can release it & it will move until X starts. I tried editing out usplash in grub. It's the same it stops & won't write to the screen unless I hold down the space bar. About half way through I can release it & it boots normally but early on it just waits until I press the space bar again. Weird huh!

When you remove the "usplash" in grub, remove also the "quiet" word and see the messages that appear before it waits for you to press space. Do they say anything useful?

I just tried it I was writing down what was on the screen & it moved a little. I then remembered a log should be left here's a section of /var/log/dmesg the 173 line is where it jumped & 262 is where I held down the key.

Reboot and enter your PC BIOS. Look for the APCI setting and disable it. Save and continue to boot. See if this doesn't fix your problem.

HP gives almost no options in BIOS so I can't turn off APCI.
