    Vista, Ubuntu (Wubi) and Kubuntu

I posted a message for 8.04 but did not wait for reply.

Few days ago I installed Ubuntu Wubi in Vista and got it to work (had issues installing in partition).

The boot menu presented choice of Vista (default) and Ubuntu.

Today I could install Kubuntu in the partition that was empty.
    Then Kubuntu upgraded the OS.

Now when I boot I see GRUB Menu first with following choices:

    Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-9-generic
Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-9-generic (recovery mode)
    Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic (recovery mode)
    Ubuntu 8.10, memtest86+

    Other operating systems:

    Windows Vista/Longhorn (loader)
    Windows Vista/Longhorn (loader)

When I choose last choice, I see Windows Boot Manager showing Vista (default) and Ubuntu.

I would like to see boot menu as:
    • Microsoft Windows Vista
    • Vista Recovery
    • Ubuntu
    • Kubuntu
    • Kubuntu Recovery

Is it possible ? What do I need to do ?

    TIA

Edit the GRUB boot menu, I think that's all.
Not sure how you've installed everything, but sounds like GRUB is your bootloader, right?

      Thanks.

I was able to edit the menu.lst and change default.

Now "Vista / Ubuntu - Menu" is default choice and then it shows Vista as default choice.

But something is wrong with Ubuntu install (it's Wubi install).

      It's throwing errors >

Re: Vista, Ubuntu (Wubi) and Kubuntu

I could not get mono moonlight to work in FireFox on Kubuntu.

The compatibility explicitely states it supports Ubuntu 8.04

So I uninstalled Ubuntu Wubi and started to install Ubuntu 8.04 in separate partition.

Even this version throws I/O Error after about 24% progress.
(First I had this issue with Ubuntu 8.10)

In the process Ubuntu corrupted the GRUB MBR (Error 15 and then Error 22).

So I could not run any OS.

Luckily I had original Vista CD. Ran "bootrec.exe /fixmbr" and "bootrec.exe /fixboot" from command prompt of boot CD.

        Back to square one.

Instead of installing Kubuntu via Wubi, seriously consider setting up a dual-boot system. It's not hard. Read through the The definitive dual-booting guide: Linux, Vista and XP step-by-step and take a few notes (or print it out for reference). This is probably one of the best, if not the best, guides on setting up a dual-boot system you will find. I, as well as others in KFN, have used it.
