Laptop or desktop PC?
It's likely that the system was brought down, but the signal to turn off the PC wasn't issued. Assuming this is the case, you just hold the power button on the PC just long enough to see the drive light go out.
You can confirm this 'behavior' by removing the quiet kernel boot option from the grub.lst file (file has to be edited as root). That way, when you boot/shutdown you see all the messages. When shutting down, you will probably see as the last displayed message:
System halted.
This is what my laptop does when I shutdown.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

When I will shut down... I can push on the start-up button, but I will to switch user. There is a quest account, with no rights to do anything else then using opera browser.
But I can switch user in the terminal part ctrl + alt F1) but when I there change user i can not back to the graphic mode.
Hey, I have a problem with the logout of Kubuntu. When I try to log out I get a black screen and it just wont get any further.
What could be the problem?

Hi there,
I have a similar problem. When I choose reboot or shutdown I get a black screen after several seconds. Currently I have to press CTRL + ALT + DEL to overcome this. Otherwise the computer stays in this 'black hole' mode for unlimited period. When I press the mentioned combination the operation continues without problems - Kubuntu progress bar appears followed by restart or shutdown (depending on my choice).
Is there any command line method? I would li8ke to have a clean logout / shutdown /restart so my desktop doesn't have to be reconfigured on every boot.
It would be nice if you check your log files for errors and share them with me in order to make a quick comparison with mine.

Any way the issue went away with update to kde4.2 and came back again last night after another update
I have had the same issue.
I use my neon kde nightly most of the time and don't have that issue there.
In fact I have almost no issues, appart from missing plasmoids (some).
I don't know what the kubuntu guys are doing to kde4.X but it doesn't bode well.
I can't figure why a nightly build should be faster and more stable that a released version.
Since upgrading to kde4.2 my machine is noticbly slower when under stress.
Vmware running (dreamweaver, flash), using gimp heavily (6-8 large files open simultaneously), open firefox, using openoffice, listening to music, reading / answering mails, etc.
Sometimes I have to reboot every 15 to 20 min. This is on a PIV with 2GB Ram.
But degress.
I never found a proper solution to the log out issue and just don't have the time to check every log file for something so rudimentary as logging out / restarting.
Still no luck with this. I tried several things to no avail:
- removed compiz-fusion
- installed the latest KDE - 4.2
- removed a lot of unused packages
- installed latest drivers (fglrx)
Just FYI - I have OpenSUSE with KDE 4.2 running like a charm.
