    Some 8.10 issues (PARTLY SOLVED)

The 8.10 install went very well. Fast and easy. Now that I have it up I have a few issues:

    1. Window size - I open an application, set the window size to what I want, use it, then close it. When I open it again it is back to the default window size. I looked all over for an option for this and did a search on issues. Is this a shortfall in 8.10 or did I miss something? I FOUND A SOLUTION TO THIS. RIGHT CLICK ON THE WINDOW EDGE AND USE ADVANCED/SPECIAL WINDOW SETTING TO SET THE SIZE TO REMEMBER. BUT YOU HAVE TO DO IT FOR EVERY WINDOW.

    2. I tried using help in digiKam and get a message that khelpcenter is not installed. I can only find khelpcenter4 in the repos and it is installed. Do I need to get it from 8.04?

    3. Really bad fonts. The fonts in all my windows appear to be thin and ragged. I have anti-alias enabled and dpi forced to 96. That didn't seem to change much. Am I missing a font setting here?

    4. When I open a new window or bring an old window to focus I often get a jiggly set of thin coloured lines for a few seconds. Is this a refresh issue on my monitor?

    5. I selected a slide show as my wallpaper and it is working except all the pictures are very big and you only see a segment of them. I couldn't find an option crop or resize any place?

That should do for now. TIA

#1. Great, that had been annoying me too!

Sorry I can't help on the others, my fonts are inconsistent and bad too.

what is the problem you are having with digiKam? maybe some of the people on here that use it, like myself, could help you with it.

      give this a shot....

are you using a Nvidia card? this is typically the case, though with the new Nvidia driver (180) that is out it seems to be solved.

      5. I selected a slide show as my wallpaper and it is working except all the pictures are very big and you only see a segment of them. I couldn't find an option crop or resize any place?
Gwenview is really good for this and is really easy to use.

How do you get the new Nvidia driver? I'm having the same screen problem.

@Calgarian - Thanks for answering the first one. I was wondering how to do that too.

On 1: I had this problem with firefox and had to edit localstore.rdf - it never occured to me that KDE can also tell an app how to behave! What a glorious desktop manager it is

On 3: have you got ttf-liberation installed? Or msttcorefonts? But it is prolly down to your NVIDIA card...

On 4: have you tried envy? dibl wrote a nice howto in this forum.

I think the answer to the Digikam question is that the version shipped is a KDE3 application and so it's looking for KDE3 help which I suspect won't be available to 8.10

@Datman and Calgarian, first open a Konsole window and
              Code:
              lspci
Look at the output for your video card or chip, in a line that looks similar to this:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G94 [GeForce 9600 GT] (rev a1)
If it is Nvidia or ATI, then you can use EnvyNG to install the proprietary driver. Follow the procedure I wrote here:

              http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...2816#msg152816

If it is not an Nvidia or ATI chip, then you've got some further work, but if you search this forum or Ubuntu forums you will find threads about how to set them up in 8.10.

Re: Some 8.10 issues (PARTLY SOLVED)

This has been great stuff, love it. Thanks guys and glad I could help a few.

                The font.config suggestion worked well.

Excellent thought on the Digikam help problem. I'll just use on-line help. I was wanting to read about a certain color adjustment setting was all and on-line did work well.

My graphics card is the on board Intel 82865G. I've read a few other comments about this problem by putting "garbage video" in Google. It seems pretty common for some reason. I haven't found an answer yet. I think I'll try a separate video card. I'm not a gamer I just do lots of digital photo and scanning stuff and freeing the shared memory would help me. The problem is an older motherboard with AGP so I need to find a good card for Linux that is also AGP. I don't expect that to fix the "garbage video" issue.
