    KDE4 not working at all

I am trying to get to install 8.10 on my dell optiplex gx260 ( 1GB ram Pen 4 1.8GHz ) the live cd always get as far as the kde4 splash screen shows 3 icons and quits and tries again and over and over. I have started in safe mode no difference, i have tried the daily build no difference and checked the cd ( it works perfect on my laptop ).
As a test i download SUSE 11 KDE and that had no problems on the dell at all, bar no seeing my wireless. Whats wrong with Kubuntu KDE4?
    Thanks:<br />Using a Toshiba A300-21H ,3GB ram,Intel Core2Duo 2Ghz,Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD,intel wifi link 5100. Tux wants you!

If i recall correctly, when the CD first boots, it offers you the keyboard choices, and the next screen offers the choices to try it out, install it, or check the disk.

Checking it is highly recommended, and even if it shows one faulty file, bin it and burn another, preferably at 4x, then try again.

    Good Luck.

I had run the check on the disk each time also, always comes back fine. I also used different cds and still nothing.

Well, i'm loath to suggest the Alternate Install disk, because if the Live CD cannot load, you may well have problems even if you do install with the Alternate.

Maybe someone with greater knowledge than myself (not difficult ) will drop in shortly and help you out.

If I remember correctly there is also a no acpi mode as things like this can sometimes be as a result of power management issues. Check that at the start although I've never had to do it myself so I can't point straight to it.

            These both worked for me:

Hit F6 and add irqpoll acpi=off to the end, then continue using the "LiveCD" (ie rather than the "Install" route)

Hit F4 and go the safe mode" route...

Re: KDE4 not working at all

I had tried the F4 and acpi options before, just when the beta came out but they did nothing for me also. Perhaps i should just wait a bit for the released version.

If you have an integrated Intel Video Card you card try forcing the "intel" drivers to disable card auto-detection.
In my case, it worked out.

How do i do that, forcing the intel drivers?

Re: KDE4 not working at all

Maybe in section device of xorg.conf you shold try to write...

                    Section "Device"
                    Identifier "Internal Intel Chipset"
                    Boardname "Intel Integrated"
                    Busid "PCI:0:2:0"
                    Driver "intel"
                    EndSection

                    and then in section screen

                    ...
                    Device "Internal Intel Chipset"
                    ...

if it doesn't work try also to force 16 bit color depth

                    ...
                    Defaultdepth 16
                    ...

                      how do I edit it?

i'm at the cli and I thought it was

                      nano ets/x11/xorg.conf

Re: KDE4 not working at all

I'm a little confused with the remarks above. I edited the file, but it say it ignores the file or something. Once I edit and save it, do I need to do anything else?

Yes, after editing xorg.conf, for the changes to take effect you have to restart the X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
