Xbox Controller S not working properly

I'm having no luck over on the Ubuntu Forums, so I'm hoping that someone can help me out here. I'm using KDE 4.2.

I plug my Xbox Controller S into the USB slot (using an Xbox-to-USB adapter). On the Joystick tab of the Keyboard and Mouse page (under System Settings), it shows the controller is plugged in. It identifies the controller as Xbox Controller Japan, I think.

But the problem is that it doesn't recognize any input. The left analog stick acts as a mouse device, apparently, but no other buttons or the right analog stick work.

On the Ubuntu Forums I found a "How To" on a user-space driver for Xbox and Xbox 360 controllers. While the guide was outdated, I followed it as best I could. But the driver wouldn't run (kept giving errors about not having access to uinput, or that uinput or joydev weren't running), and xpad kept loading every time I plugged in the controller.

I also read on the one Ubuntu page about the FDI files that an update to a package (I think xserver-xorg-input-evdev) supposedly fixes this issue. The problem is that I have that updated package installed, and it still doesn't work. I even installed xserver-xorg-input-joystick, and that didn't help.

I don't know if something is configured incorrectly, or if it's a KDE4 issue, or if the problem isn't entirely fixed. But it's really annoying and I hope that someone could help me fix this.

I'm still having this issue, and I haven't found any help yet. Does anyone know what I can do?
