HELP me not go back to Windows!

I have been struggling to get sound working on my Gateway Laptop. It is model S-7200N. I am running Kubuntu 8.10.

    lspci shows sound:
00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 04)

    asoundconf list shows:
    Names of available sound cards:
    ICH6

I performed asoundconf-gtk and selected ICH6 in the menu. It also showed PulseAudio. I have tried both, with no sound.

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated. I am at my wits end right now.

    Thanks!

I may try that later today. It is frustrating. I like everything else about this though.
