Solved - Sluggish performance on Laptop w/nvidia 8200m

Looking for some help with sluggish performance. I have just installed (tried) 32 and 64 bit versions of 8.10 but both produce very sluggish performance. HP Laptop AMD Turion X2 w/nVidia 8200m, 3GB RAM. Screens draw very slowly and mouse hangs for 3-4 seconds periodically. Restricted driver is active. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

What is the particular model number of your laptop?

Have you installed the Nvidia Driver? KMenu>Applications>System>Hardware Drivers

Yes, I have also loaded a couple of other distros that did not have this issue, they just didn't have wifi.

I too have encountered the same problem . Nice to find out i'm not the only one . Could it be the updates . I installed the nvidia driver after my updates which took for ever . I know in the past i had issues with the nvidia driver supplied by Kubuntu as it would not work for dual screen and required the original driver from nvidia for dualscreen to work . Can this somehow be the problem too . Anyways i hope someone from Kubuntu can fix this problem . If i get the nvidia driver to work i'll post back ..................Northernfrog.

              FYI:

              http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3099998.0

I downloaded and installed 180.11 on my rig last night -- it seems to work fine. Release notes indicate if fixes a memory leak (which I had not experienced).

If you open a Konsole window and run
              Code:
              top
you should be able to observe what is using the resources so heavily.

I am not convinced the problem lies with the nVidia driver. I had the same sluggish performance before I installed the driver. I am not at my computer right now but I will do a "top" to see what is going on when I get home.

Not sure what to think about this problem . Diden't work using Hardware driver app nor using envy to install driver . Funny thing is both methods work on Ubuntu that i was just testing prior to testing the new Kubuntu kde4.1 . Erk's me abit as Kubuntu was my main system till i tried the new KDE4.1 . Guess i was let down . Anyways when i see this problem resolved , i'll put it back on as my main system . Till then i'm stuck with Ubuntu . The shamefull thing is everything worked great except the video driver . My guess is the problem lies in KDE4.1 , hopefully the wait for fix won't be long . Till then , bye , and see you's later .......... Northernfrog .

Well I resolved the issue. I installed the nVidia 180.11 beta driver with envyng and everything is pretty snappy now. Now I believe it's time to move on to 64 bit version of 8.10. Thanks to dibl -
