Editing dotfiles with Kate

I want to edit one of my dotfiles with Kate (a file within .VirtualBox, as it happens), but those files don't show up in the file list that kate displays on opening. I can type them in explicitly, but that's probably unnecessary work. Is there a way to get them to show up in kate's file list?

In my system the Open dialog box has a wrench icon that contains a "show hidden files" menu item. That works but it indicate that F8 should also work. On my system it doesn't.
